There is no cure-all against all diseases of intervertebral disks. The starting point is a vast number of cases of conservative treatment with analgesics, rest, sometimes – lying in a height-adjustable bed. If in spite of conservative treatment pains persevere, perception disorders aggravate or the musculature weakens, operative intervention is expedient. An operation is essential and urgent when diseases of intervertebral disks lead to bladder dysfunction, paralyses, loss of potency, intractable pain, or a severe restriction of the ability to walk.
